  • Where are the groups held?
All groups are held at The Airplane Spoon developmental center (697 Menlo Ave, Menlo Park, CA 94025). Some classes are held inside (younger children, cooking) and groups are held outside in our enclosed outdoor play space. We have our own private parking lot and bathroom for families’ access during group times.
  • What ages are the classes/groups for?
Our classes/groups are specifically designed for young children (ages 1 - 9). Some older children with more complex needs may be considered.
  • How much do they cost? Are they reimbursable?
Our "My First" Classes are considered learning classes, not therapy, and are not reimbursable by insurance as they are inclusive for all children. Our My First Play Class costs $75 for a 45-minute session. Our My First Cooking Class costs $100 for a 60-minute session. Our Social Speech Therapy Groups cost $150 for a 60-minute session. A detailed coded Superbill is provided for families who submit their paid invoices to their insurance companies for reimbursement purposes.
  • Can I join mid-term? Do they have ongoing enrollment?
For the most part, our classes and groups have a set term that they run with the same set of 4-6 children. This way, we can build on previously targeted skills and support familiarity and community between the children and parents.
  • Do parents need to be present?
Yes! We require that a parent, or other caregiver (grandparent, nanny), is present for the whole class/group session. This is not only for us to be able to engage in more hands-on activities so each adult can provide support for their child, but also for the parents to learn strategies and to observe first-hand their child being successful and learning new skills.
  • How big are the classes/groups?
Classes and groups are kept small, ranging from 3-6 children to allow for more practice and a more familiar relationship building setting.
  • When should my child start therapy?
The sooner the better! Families benefit from early intervention (as young as newborn babies) by being able to better meet their children's needs from an early age to establish strong and functional habits and skills from the beginning for lifelong success. More current research shows us that the “wait and see” approach is not recommended, as it promotes an ongoing trend of unsuccessful/incorrect patterns. Brain and behavioral sciences indicate that early support establishes more solid learning habits for a more stable ongoing learning foundation. The longer the delays/disorders are unsupported, the more risk for persistent impairments or ongoing need for intervention.
  • What is the process to get evaluated/get started?
    1. Schedule your FREE 20-minute consultation to determine if a comprehensive Feeding Evaluation is warranted. 2. Schedule your feeding evaluation session. This will be a 90-minute session that will be held in your home. 3. Have your virtual Results Review with your therapist, who will discuss the evaluation results and recommendations. 4. If therapy is recommended, the frequency and schedule will be determined at the end of the Results Review. Sessions can begin as soon as the following day (pending availability). 5. Typically the timeline from the initial consultation to getting started with sessions is 2-3 weeks.
  • Are parents involved in the sessions?
Yes! At The Airplane Spoon, parent involvement is not only encouraged, it is expected. This supports the parent-child relationship through trust, fun, and exploration. In addition, by learning the strategies we practice during sessions, families can carry over at home for the child to have more consistency and ongoing opportunities to progress.

  • Is communication therapy the same as speech therapy? What is the difference?
Communication is the overarching concept implying the ability to receive, send, process, and comprehend concepts for the purpose of interpersonal exchange. Communication is quite complex and involves the systems of cognition, hearing, attention, executive functions, social-pragmatics, language, speech, voice, and fluency. Therefore, at The Airplane Spoon, we promote the concept of Communication Therapy (rather than just speech or language). Furthermore, just because a person may not use their voice to speak, does not mean they do not (or cannot) communicate. All of our communication specialists at The Airplane Spoon are nationally certified, state-licensed Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs).
